Do you want to visit the real England and not just overcrowded, super touristy London?

If you´re thinking of travelling north, Newcastle is not to be missed! Newcastle is cheap and cheerful. You´ll be sure to find friendly people (although you may not understand their strong accents), beautiful sights, fun activities and a vibrant nightlife (with cheap drinks). Easily accessible by air, train, car or bus, Newcastle has so much to offer. Below, I have compiled a list of 26 fun things to do in Newcastle.

1.     Alnwick Castle
As featured in Harry Potter, Alnwick Castle is a stunning castle that offers an interactive historical experience. They offer a number of activities including broomstick training lessons, dragons´ quests and jousting. Check out their website for a full list of events.

2.     GO Gateshead’s Clip ‘n Climb

If you like climbing this is definitely the place for you. Located in Gateshead Leisure centre is Clip ´n Climb, an alternative place to go climbing with many climbing challenges that are completely different to a typical climbing wall.

3.     Victoria Tunnel Tour

Explore the tunnels underneath Newcastle with an exclusive tour of the Victoria Tunnels. Make sure you book well in advance as they only hold tours on certain days.

4.     InflataSpace

InflataSpace is the UKs largest inflatable theme park. It boasts an inflatable arena with many activities such as slides, assault courses and wipe-out challenges.

5.     Jarrow Hall

Here you will find an authentic Anglo Saxon farm and village, along with Jarrow Hall house and the Bede Museum.

This 30 barrel micro-brewery can be found at the Palace of Arts in Exhibition Park. Founded in 2000, it is home to quality brews that can be found in pubs throughout the country.

Why explore the stadium like a normal person when you could walk along the roof? For football fans and adrenaline junkies this is a must.

What´s more British than the BBC? In Newcastle, they open up their studios in between filming so that you can have a snoop around behind the scenes.

13.                       St Mary's Lighthouse

Climb the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse and be rewarded with magnificent views of the east coast. To get there, you must go in between tides via a short causeway.

14.                       Wet ‘n’ Wild

This is the North East’s largest indoor water park. Enjoy a fun filled day sliding down the slides, including ´Kamikaze´ – the UKs fastest water slide!

15.                       Marsden Bay

With dramatic cliffs and a horde of caves to explore, Marsden Bay was made for exploring. Then after a long day exploring, settle down for a drink in the Grotto pub.

16.                       Arbeia Roman Fort

The fort is situated above the entrance to the River Tyne so that it could guard the main sea route to Hadrian's Wall. It was a central garrison and provided military supplies to other forts along the wall.

17.                       Gateshead Millennium Bridge

This bridge is open for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river Tyne. With it´s interesting tilting architecture, it is a must see.

18.                       Theatre Royal

For thespians and theatre goers there is the theatre royal. With a history reaching back to the 18th century, this theatre is not only architecturally stunning, but is host to a horde of fabulous shows.

19.                       Angel of the North

A 20 metre high and 54 metre wide sculpture. It was designed and created by artist Antony Gormley in 1998.

20.                       Segedunum Fort Viewing Tower

If you´re not afraid of heights, you should climb this tower for fabulous views of the Segedunum fort remains, as well as the Tyne River. Check out their website for special events such as roman market days.

This small, independent cinema run by volunteers only shows alternative movies that you won´t find in mainstream cinemas. From experimental arthouse projects to silent classics, this is an escape from the commercialised, overpriced multiplex cinemas.
